Keynote Speakers


Professor of Hospitality Management
Until recently Alison was Vice-Dean (Research) of the Strathclyde Business School at the University of Strathclyde. Prior to this she was Head of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Alison has been publishing extensively and teaching since 1984, primarily in her specialist area of small and entrepreneurial hospitality and tourism businesses. She has authored a wide range of journal papers and books related to entrepreneurship. Within the field of hospitality key contributions have been made through the co-edited books In Search of Hospitality and Hospitality a Social Lens. Evidence of the esteem in which Alison is held is provided in the wide range of visiting and external appointments that demonstrate her academic standing at both national and international level. Most recent is as a Visiting Professor at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She has taught entrepreneurship in hospitality and tourism extensively overseas at universities in, for example, Austria, the Netherlands, Finland, Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Australia, Lapland, Iran and Mauritius.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer
Norm Thompson joined Air New Zealand in 1968. He currently holds the role of Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Air New Zealand and is the Chairman of the Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand, the Air New Zealand Environment Trust, Altitude, the New Zealand Tourism Exchange and TAE. He is also a board member of UNICEF New Zealand. Some of the key roles Norm has held at Air New Zealand prior to be being appointed to his current role include Group General Manager Short Haul Airlines (accountability for Domestic, Tasman and Pacific operations), Group General Manager Marketing, Network and Sales, Regional General Manager The Americas and Regional General Manager New Zealand and Pacific Islands. Norm's recent executive education includes a business management programme at Stamford University in the United States and accreditation with the New Zealand Institute of Directors.



Chief Executive
Kevin was brought up in Hamilton, where he completed a Bachelor of Management Studies. He then moved to Wellington where he worked at Unilever in a variety of marketing roles. A spell in advertising followed, working on accounts including Cadbury and Air New Zealand. Kevin also spent around 5 years in London, taking on a range of marketing roles with a big food company. After returning from the UK, he joined NZ Dairy where he worked in marketing and GM roles. In 2003 Kevin joined Telecom. This challenge led to a variety of roles including General Manager Marketing for Telecom’s consumer business. When Telecom established a JV with Yahoo! Kevin was made inaugural Chief Executive. Kevin joined Tourism New Zealand as Chief Executive at the beginning of 2010.
